WELCOME TO HIGGINS-ENGLISH WIKISPACE!

This space will be used to create "blogs" from the perspective of characters from To Kill a Mockingbird.

Please respond to two of your classmates' blogs. You should reply in the voice of another character from the book. Good luck!

Firstly, welcome to 2009!
new_year_09.jpg
new_year_09.jpg

For this week, your homework is going to be listed on this wikispace. You should check it every night when you get home. I will post a discussion question in this space for each of you to answer in your blogs. On some occassions, you may also be asked to respond to a blog of one of your peers.
I will also be answering the questions on my own blog, which you can feel free to peruse whenever you would like. (If I can remember the site address, of course.) I found it:http://tkmhiggins.blogspot.com/

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

January 5, 2009:
-Read chapter 12 for tomorrow
-Read the following section on "Norms" and answer the questions that follow in one blog post. You may number them in your post, if you so desire.

Social Norms: Guidelines provided by a culture for judging acceptable and unacceptable behavior. These rules may be explicit (spoken) or implicit (unspoken).
Failure to stick to the rules can result in "punishments," the most common of which is exclusion from the group.

Types of Social Norms include:

Explicit Norms are written or spoken openly (for instance, you know that you must wear a collared shirt to school; you know that it is illegal to commit certain crimes)

Implicit Norms are not openly stated (but you find out when you do not follow them--for instance, you don't realize no one wears spandex to school; no one ever told you; you wear spandex; you are hence an outcast)

Subjective Norms are expectations held by people we admire about how we will behave (For example, your parents)

Personal Norms are standards we have about our own behavior.

1. Based on the above, what kind of norm does Atticus seem to follow most? Why do you think so? (About 100 words)

2. Based on the above, please describe three examples of people who break some kind of implicit norm in Part I of TKM; that is, no one says, " Don't ever do that," but most people just don't act that way. (About 150 words)

January 6, 2009
Homework:
-Read chapter 13 of TKM
-Read the following descriptions of "Stages of Morality." From these stages, select two of them, and describe what two characters fall under that stage's category. Please give give reasons for your choices. For each stage you should use about 100 words to describe the two characters. This should be done on your individual blog. You do not need to send me the link to your blog again if it is already posted above. If your link is not posted above, please e-mail me the link so I can check your homework!

1. Obedience: You do what you have to do to avoid punishment.

2. Self-interest: You do what will make you personally happiest.

3. Conformity: You do what you have to do to make other people proud of you or pleased with you.

4. Order and Law: You do what the rule or law tells you to do.

5. Social contract: YOu do what the group decides to do based on consensus, compromise, and discussion.

6. Universal Ethics: You do what you would want someone else to do to you, regardless of what the law, the authorities, or your peers say. You do it because it's right. You try to see other people's points of view.

January 7, 2009 - In class...
It seems that only three of you were able to post your blogs last night. Please take the time today to complete and post your blog. Be sure to folow the directions carefully: 2 characters per chosen stage of morality.

Secondly, when you complete that task, please complete the following in at least 100 words:
Re-read the scene from pg. 133-134.
What do you infer is the reasoning behind this conversation?
What does Scout mean when she says "it takes a woman to do that kind of work?"

January 7, 2009
Hey, Folks! Considering our issues with Blogger today, you do not have anything to respond to this evening. If you are not caught up on blogs, or your blogs will not post, please get them posted or get them e-mailed to me. I will give you credit for getting them done (only work from this week).
You will be held responsible for reading chapter 14 this evening! Enjoy.

January 8, 2009
Homework: Finish Reading chapter 15
After reading, please answer the following in about 100 words apiece:

1. What theme is most prevalent throughout chapter 15? How is this theme illustrated within the chapter? When have you seen this theme illustrated previously within the text?

2. What does this chapter show about Atticus? What does this chapter show about the Cunninghams? (Mr. Cunningham, in particular.)

January 9,2009
Read chapter 16
Enjoy your weekend!

January 12, 2009
Ladies and Gents:
Read chapter 17
If you did not complete your vocabulary sentences, please do so for tomorrow.

January 20, 2009
TKM takes place in the 1930’s during segregation and before Dr. King’s inspirational leadership. How has America changed from the years of TKM, the fight of Dr. King, and the events that we all witnessed today? Should be 100-150 words on a separate sheet of paper.
Should be read to page 227.

January 22, 2009
Please read from 227-237 for tonight's homework.
When you have finished reading, please respond to the following on a SEPARATE sheet of paper (not on blogger):
If justice is not served in court, is it okay to serve justice on your own? Is vigilante justice as just? (100 to 150 words).
See you in class!

Write a Pledge. What will you change in your life? What will you change to better your world? Your community? Your family?

I Pledge Video
FYI: the 21st slavery statement @ the end of the video is a reference to Ashton and Demi’s pledge, which is to work to eliminate 21st century slavery (children sold as sex slaves, as well as bonded, forced, and child labor). Here’s a link that breaks it down: http://www.newint.org/ issue337/facts.htm
